The Holy Spirit
THE HOLY SPIRIT
PURPOSE:
To help the Student in the understanding of the Holy Spirit. It is the third personage of the Holy Trinity.
PROLOGUE:
God sent the Holy Spirit to live in the souls of all those who are Christian. Jesus was flesh and blood and was limited within space and time but the Holy Spirit is Spiritual and is not constrained within space and time.
The book of Acts chapters 1 and 2 tells us of how the Holy Ghost (Spirit) descended upon the Apostles. Acts 1:2 “Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost (Spirit) had given commandments unto the Apostles whom he had chosen” shows us that Jesus must first ascend into Heaven before the Holy Ghost (Spirit) could come.
The Holy Spirit is the “spiritual presence” Jesus left with us to reside in the deep recess of our Soul. The Holy Spirit is the means by which we can communicate with God through Jesus. Jesus taught his Disciples to ask God in his name and it would be given them. Jesus is the intercessor for us which is why we end our prayers “in Jesus name”.
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 [Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
In 1 Corinthians 3:16 “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” This tells us that the Holy Spirit lives within us.
When you accept Jesus as your lord and savior, the Holy Spirit comes into your soul. This is the means by which God can commune with us. When we pray, we pray to God, the Father through Jesus the Intercessor. Jesus told us to ask of the Father in his name when we pray. That is why we close our prayers with “in Jesus name”. The Holy Spirit is the connecting force that enables us to pray. That is also why we can pray silently. The Holy Spirit residing within us hears that prayer as loudly as if you shouted it out from a mountain top.
Revelations 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. How clear it is that we must all allow Jesus to come in to our hearts in the form of the Holy Spirit.
There are many paintings of Jesus standing at a door and knocking. The latch to the door is on the inside and the door must be opened before Jesus can come in.
PROCEDURE:
1. What does it mean to be “the temple of God”?
2. What does it mean for the “Spirit of God to dwell within you”?
3. Can we pray directly to God or do we need to have someone else do it for us?
4. How can it be that we can pray silently?
5. Does it mean that the Holy Spirit is always with me?
